Okamoto Chikugai was born on February 15, 1915 in Niigata Prefecture. Over time he studied Meian shakuhachi style under Sakurai Muteki and Tanikita Muchiku, Kinpu-Ryū under Narita Shōei, and Kinko-Ryū under Shimizu Akira and Inoue Shigemi, becoming a master of each different style. He began teaching in 1941. He was chairman of the Meian Sōryū Kai, advisor of the Komuso Kenkyukai, a lecturer at Yokohama National University, and formed the Tokyo Chikuinkai in 1954. Okamoto Chikugai was an important and influential mentor to many shakuhachi practitioners.
