Kiku Day is a shakuhachi performer and PhD ethnomusicologist from Copenhagen, Denmark. She was born in Harajuku, Tokyo, Japan and left the country with her American and Japanese parents to Denmark when she was 5. She studied intensively with Okuda Atsuya for 11 years before returning to Europe and doing her studies in Ethnomusicology at SOAS, University of London. The studies also took her to Mills College, Oakland California where she took her MFA in music performance specialising in contemporary music and improvisation. She organised the first European Shakuhachi Summer School with Michael Some Coxall and co-founded the European Shakuhachi Society and served as the chair for 10 years. She was also the chair of the organising committee for the 7th World Shakuhachi Festival 2018 held at Goldsmiths, London. Kiku is dedicated to performing on jinashi shakuhachi both honkyoku and contemporary music. Despite her rural home at a meditation centre in Denmark, she continues to teach shakuhachi online and loves teaching. She is presently editing two books, of which one is a shakuhachi anthology.
