Torii Namino began her study of the koto and shamisen with her mother, Ichimura Ayano, a professional musician, when she was five years old. Beginning 1951 she studied Yamada Ryū koto with Nakanoshima Kinichi at the Tokyo University of Fine Arts and, from 1963, also studied with Koshino Eisho. She began giving koto lessons in the Yamada style from 1950 and, in 1951, was formally adopted by Torii Tonami V. In 1953 she was granted the name Torii Namino and was authorized to succeed her adopted mother as iemoto of her Yamada Ryū school. In 1965 she received her Master of Arts degree as a member of the first class to receive a graduate degree from the Tokyo University of Fine Arts.
