千々岩月山

Chijiwa Gassan
2/5/1879 - ????

Сякухати

Born February 5, 1879 in Oaza Futsumaki, Shunfurin Village, Kanzaki District, Saga Prefecture, to a monk. Graduated from Kyoto Buddhist University in April 1904.
Sometime around his 18th birthday, he learned how to play the shakuhachi reading Kinko-ryū notation, and was able to play classic ensemble pieces such as “Shōchikubai”, “Azuma Jishi”, as well as “Kurokami” and “Rokudan”. However, he disliked temple life and moved to the United States in August 1905 and became involved in the newspaper business in Los Angeles. In 1910 he moved to Long Beach, California, where he started a general merchandise business, but in April 1920 he returned to Los Angeles, where he was again engaged in writing.
Around 1916, he returned to the shakuhachi and studied independently using Tozan-ryū notation. In February 1929 he formally entered the school of Master Tanaka Shūyō, receiving his instructor's license in September 1930.
He stayed in Los Angeles and continued to play and teach shakuhachi.
