Ichimaru Yūzan

Ichimaru Yūzan (Ichimaru Hisashi) was born June 26th, 1887 in Oaza Uruke, Kurokami-cho, Kumamoto City. He graduated from Nagasaki Telegraph Training School in November, 1904, and became an official of Keijō (Seoul, Korea) Post Office in October, 1907, and continued to work there for 22 years. He was a fan of Tozan-ryū shakuhachi for a long time, and in June 1912, he began formal lessons with Tozan master Hosoda Yōzan, who was living in Korea at the time. In October 1916, he was transferred to Tozan master Satō Reizan. He practiced diligently and made progress, and was recommended to the rank of Jun-shihan (associate master) in July 1926, and then to the rank of Shihan (master) in February 1931. In his free time as a government official, he taught younger children and was a key figure in the Keijō City Executive Association. He enjoyed sake and cigarettes.
