Shamisen

Hase Yuki was a famous blind Jiuta shamisen player and teacher.
His childhood name was Hanzaburō.
He entered Kumamoto's Yukinoto (Osaka school Kyushu-style music school) at the age of six. He was given the name Teruka, but at the age of 17, he changed his name to Sudare-no-to . At 21 he studied under Kurume's Miyazaki Betto ( a high-ranking younger brother of the Ishizuka Kengyō school). From Betto he received the name Kōkito.
He became an independent teacher and performer in Kumamoto from 1877 and was known as a virtuoso of the Shamisen.
He moved to Tokyo and introduced Kyushu-style Jiuta to Tokyo for the first time. He made changes to the body of the shamisen and its bachi (plectrum).
His students included Kawase Satoko and Fukuda Eika, and it is said that his influence on Tokyo Hōgaku was profound.
