Hatsumi Sōkyō (birth name Hatsuji) was born January 15, 1912 in Katsuta City, Ibaraki Prefecture. In 1933 he began a long career in law enforcement, eventually serving as Chief of Police of both Katsuta City and Edosaki. In 1937 he became chief of the First Investigative Division at Katsuta Police headquarters. From the age of 11 he studied Kinko-ryū shakuhachi with Watanabe Jūdō. After Watanabe passed away, he became a student at Chikuyusha and, in 1937, was awarded his Shihan (Masters license) by Kawase Junsuke I. He began teaching in 1948. During his long, 50+ years in the shakuhachi world he was chairman of the Chikuyu Association, a councilor of the Kinko-ryū Association, an advisor to the Ibaraki Prefecture Sankyoku Association, and an advisor to the Watari Prefecture Shakuhachi Association.
