Born in Osaka on May 29, 1925, Ōnishi Shunzan (Ōnishi Kazumi) studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Hoshida Ichizan I, earning his instructors license in 1944. Aside from being a respected teacher and player, he was also a noted shakuhachi maker with a career that lasted more than 40 years.
