Born December 23, 1925 in Hokkaido, Ōta Shōzan (Ōta Yoshikichi) studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Kubo Hōzan. He became an instructor in 1962. He was a member of the Tozan-ryū Hokkaido Executive Association and Sapporo Executive Association.
