Born April 28, 1904 in Kushiro City, Itō Shōzan (I Katsunosuke) studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under the Nakamura Kōzan. He received his instructors license in 1947. During a career spanning over 50 years, he belonged to the Tozan-ryū Shakuhachi Gaku-kai, was head of Shōfū-sha, and a member of the Sapporo Executive Committee.
