Clarence Dozan Ledbetter
Shakuhachi
Clarence Dozan Ledbetter began playing the shakuhachi in 1980 when a Japanese friend's mother brought him a maple shakuhachi from Japan. In the U.S., he has studied with Ralph Samuelson, John Kaizan Neptune, and Kiyoji Yamamoto. In 1980, he formed CIRCLE IN THE ROUND with his wife, Janet Knight Ledbetter; and, in 1983, they began performing on the shakuhachi and the koto in North Carolina, VIrginia and Washington, D.C. In 1987, Ledbetter began an eight-year intensive shakuhachi study with the preeminent shakuhachi master Hozan Yamamoto. In 1991, Ledbetter received his teacher's license and Jun Shihan license, and in 1995, he became Shihan and received the name Dozan.
