In 1958, he entered the composition department of Kunitachi College of Music and studied harmony and fugue under Yuzuru Shimaoka and counterpoint under Kanji Tonosaki. After dropping out of the university, he studied under Yoriaki Matsudaira. His style is influenced by jazz and Asian / African folk music, as well as popular songs, rokyoku, and jiuta.
