Jane Nenchikuzen Tigar began playing western concert flute in 1965. She studied with Seymour "Red" Press of New York City and while an undergraduate at Yale, studied with Tom Nyfenger at the Yale School of Music. In 2010, she began formal study of shakuhachi with Michael Chikuzen Gould from whom, in 2016, she received the name Nenchikuzen and earned a Jun Shihan license. Nenchikuzen teaches via Skype and in person and has performed shakuhachi (including original improvisations) in North Carolina in dance and art programs.
