Since 1988 Ursula Fuyumi Schmidiger has stuidied the art of traditional Japanese archery and heads the Kyudo group Shoken, Kriens. Within the framework of a Kyudo seminar she experienced shakuhachi music for the first time live and was fascinated by the sound of this instrument. In the summer of 1998, she began studying the shakuhachi at the Studio of non-European music at the Music Academy in the city of Basel with Andreas Fuyu Gutzwiller, master in the tradition of the Kinko school. In September 2010 she received the teaching diploma (shihan menjô) Zenkoku Chikuyûsha and was granted the master name Fuyumi in Tokyo by Kawase Junsuke lll.
