Shakuhachi & Koto
Matsukawa Yōdō was born August 1, 1912 in Sasebo City, Kyushu (birth name Tsuyako). She learned to play koto as a young girl. She began a family with shakuhachi master Matsukawa Yōdō, but he passed away suddenly in February of 1939. To help support herself and her two young daughters, she decided to take up the shakuhachi with the goal of supplementing her income by teaching both shakuhachi and koto. Studied Kinko-ryū shakuhachi with Ishikawa Gadō in Tokyo, then Torii Kyomudō in Kumamoto, eventually receiving her teaching credentials and the performance name Yōdō (spelled with different kanji than her late husband). Affiliated with Kinko-ryū Shakuhachi Wakana-kai, Kumamoto.
