Hebaru Kōdō (Henharu Kai) was born September 16, 1905 in Yokohama. He studied Kinko-ryū shakuhachi under Murai Gidō, Nawa Keidō, Nōtomi Judō I, and Komatsu Hadō (shakuhachi maker). He belonged to the Tokyo Wafū-kai. Over his more than 50-year career, he began teaching in 1938 and made shakuhachi for more than 40 years.
