Born December 9, 1911 in Ibaraki Prefecture, Takayanagi Razan (Takayanagi Hitoshi) studied Yōzan-ryū shakuhachi under Katsuta Yōzan and the craft of shakuhachi making with Kato Yūdō. He started teaching in 1931, but stopped in 1934 to concentrate on the study of Musō-ryū honkyoku. He was a former director of Yōzan-kai.
