A native of Fukuoka City, Shibata Chikuyū (Shibata Kazuyoshi) was born March 6, 1904. He studied Kinko-ryū shakuhachi under Yamazaki Chikuin and started teaching in 1923. He was a member of the Fukuoka Sankyoku Association.
