Born March 20, 1896 in Okayama Prefecture, Kawahara Shōhō (Kawahara Kumatarō) studied shakuhachi under Itō Hōdō of the Tozan-ryū and Ueda Hōdō of the Ueda-ryū. He started teaching in 1918. He belonged to the Chikusei-kai.
