Umewaka Asano (1911 - August 4, 2006) was a Japanese folk singer and shamisen player from Akita City, Akita Prefecture, Japan. In 1979, he received the Meijin rank, the highest honor from the Japan Folk Song Society. In 1990, he founded the “Umewaka-ryu Shokumon Natori-kai” and in 1994, he dissolved the “Umewaka-ryu Shokumon Natori-kai” and formed a new organization, the “Nippon Min'yo Umewaka-ryu Rengo-kai” (later renamed the “Nippon Min'yo Umewaka-ryu Umewaka-kai”).
