Born in Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture, the eldest son of Kitahara Yoshiaki , a former samurai of the Takamatsu domain, he began learning to play the shakuhachi at the age of 10, and in 1897 became the first student of Nakao Tozan I. In 1934, he began giving shakuhachi lessons. In 1917, he began to specialize in shakuhachi making, and established the Seikado shakuhachi name.
