Shakuhachi

Born in Hiroshima Prefecture on June 22, 1893, Imai Bōzan (Imai Tetsuzō) began his Tozan-ryū shakuhachi studies in June of 1915 under Kamiya Hakuzan.
In February of 1917 he became a student of Sōke Nakao Tozan in Osaka.
He moved to Tokyo for work in September of 1918 and continued his studies under Kurakawa Shōzan.
In December of 1922, after another move to Nagoya for his job, he became a student of Ōki Keizan.
He completed his Okuden rank and, in November of 1924 he successfully sat for his Jun-Shihan (associate master) license, where he was given the name Bōzan.
After much work and appearances in special concerts, he was awarded his Shihan license in February 1930.
