Horiuchi Shōzan (Horiuchi Teizō) was born on December 13, 1905. He studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Nakajima Kakuzan. He was a member of the Kanto branch of the Tozan-ryū Shakuhachi Gaku-kai and the Kakurin-kai. He began teaching in 1951.
