Born February 17,1906 in Niigata Prefecture, Hoshino Etsudō (Hoshino Chūzō) studied Kinko-ryū shakuhachi under Kato Yūdō, Sugiyama Hōdō, and Watanabe Hōdō. Though he was an active performer as early as the 1930s, he didn’t begin teaching until 1955. He belonged to the Dōrōfū-kai and his career spanned almost 50 years.
