Shakuhachi

Ichiyanagi Gazan (Ichiyanagi Eikichi) was born on February 2, 1903 in Yamaguchi Prefecture, where his father was a sake brewer in Mikamako.
After graduating from Iwakuni Junior High School, he went to Tokyo and entered the Department of Literature at the High School of Waseda University, then the Department of Commerce at the same university. He had enjoyed playing the shakuhachi since he was a child, but never had the opportunity to study it formally so, together with a fellow Tozan-ryū player, Isono Chazan, he founded the Sagiri Association of Waseda University, and his playing progressed quickly.
In June of 1924, he was introduced to Abe Kōzan and began formal Tozan-ryū studies.
In October he completed the Shoden pieces.
In March of 1925, he finished the Chuden repertoire.
By October of 1926, he had done the Okuden pieces.
He graduated from Waseda in 1927 and, at his father’s urgung, he went back to his hometown to follow in his father's footsteps, serving as an executive of local associations, a member of the village assembly, and in other public positions.
In November 1928, he completed his studies and passed his official examination for his Jun-shihan (associate instructor) license in December in Fukuoka.
Following this he engaged in teaching and spreading the Tozan style in his hometown while devoting himself to many public and private projects.
