Kimura Kyūzan (Kimura Yoshinosuke) was born August 17, 1898 in Nishinoda, Kita-ku, Osaka City. He graduated from Noda Technical School, Osaka City in 1915. He began studying Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Kono Hōzan in April 1923 and completed the Shoden rank in June 1925. In June of 1926 he completed his Chūden studies and, In July 1927, he was granted permission to study the Okuden repertoire. In February of 1928, he was promoted to Jun-shihan (associate instructor) and was given the name Kyūzan. In August of 1929, he changed teachers to study with Yoshida Taizan. His hobbies included sports, tennis and reading.
