Hagoromo (Chikushi)

[Auch bekannt als]Feather Mantle
[Komponiert]Chikushi Katsuko - Koto

Geschichte (Shirley Kazuyo Muramoto):

This excerpt from the Noh play Hagoromo introduces the dance of the celestial spirit. The plot is as follows: The priest finds the Hagoromo, the magical feather-mantle of a Tennin, an aerial spirit or celestial dancer, hanging upon a bough. She demands its return. He argues with her, and finally promises to return it if she will teach him her dance or part of it. She accepts the offer. The dance is symbolic of the daily changes of the moon. In the finale, the Tennin is supposed to disappear like a mountain slowly hidden in the mist. The play shows the relation of the early Noh to the God-dance.

Gedicht :

Introduction:
It was on a beach of white.
Pine trees, where the tide came in, and out.
Seagulls gliding in the sky.
the faded image of Mount Fuji looms in the horizon.

Chorus:
Heavenly beings from the realm of the
Moon are dancing in black kimonos,
which reflects into the deep black
night. The heavenly beings from the
realm of the Moon are dancing in the
same kimonos, now reflecting white,
and the moon is full. Their dance
movements sway right and left, the
movement of their sleeves are so
exquisite.
