1 | Within Dreams, Without Dreams Op. 74 - Dream About Water | 夢あわせ夢たがえ - 水の夢 | 06'30 |
Koto: Yoshimura Nanae | |
This is intended to harmonize West and East around the 20-stringed koto, and is made up of notes from five dreams of water, a tree, fire, a cloud and the sky. 1, Dream about Water: adagio. A figure by the koto is overlapped by melodies from the clarinet, violin and violoncello. 2. Dream about a Tree: an intermezzo-like scherzo in dry tones, pizzicato. 3. Dream about a Fire: allegro. Three instruments appear one over another on the koto ostinato. 4. Dream about a Cloud: andante. The koto solo sings quietly on the long tone of the strings. 5. Dream about the Sky: finale. All the instruments float in atmospheric consonance. This work was written for Nanae Yoshimura and Wien Solisten Trio (clarinet, violin and violoncello), comminssioned by Wako Takakusa (Bright One Inc.), from winter in 1997 through spring in 1998 as Op.74.

Subaru is the Japanese name of Pleiades. I am now writing a series of 'Pleiades Dances' for piano, and Op. 78 is a companion piece of that composition and is newly written for piano. It is composed of seven short character pieces based on the theme of seven tones. 1. Moon: prelude with a seven-note theme. 2. Fire: allegro with overtones of pathos. 3, Water: moderato like waving water 4. Wood: scherzo associated with dried wood 5. Metal: barely glittering adagio 6. Earth: allegro looking back hitherto 7. The Sun: a presentation of the theme and a return to the beginning. Written from spring through summer in 1999, this work, Op.78, serves as the last of the trilogy, including "Moyura" and "Nabari"

Koto: Yoshimura Nanae | |
"Moyura Op. 41" is made up of five pieces (the obsolete Japanese word moyura means resonance). They represent a faint hope we have, despair from an empty dream, transparent resignation, anxiety for a far end, whose fragments touch wood and strum strings. These five scenes can be said to follow the life of a man from the cradle to the grave. 1. Largo: theme. 2. Allegro 3. Andante: intermezzo 4. Lento: adagio 5. Allegro: dance Written from spring through fall in 1990, commissioned by Nanae Yoshimura, this work may be called a sonata-like tapestry woven between Symphony No. 2 and No. 3.

18 | Nabari Op. 54 - Lento | なばりの三シ - Lento | 04'05 |
Koto: Yoshimura Nanae | |
Nabari in obsolete Japanese means "to hide away." It is composed of three parts, lent-allegro-lent, and uses 'hidden mode' (d-es-fis-g-a-b-c). 1. Lento: gloomy theme 2. Allegro: development 3. Lento molto: dim return Written from summer through fall in 1992, commissioned by Teiko Kikuchi, a 17-stringed koto player, this work should be called a vignette pre-echoing Symphony No. 3. The original was written for a 17stringed koto solo, but in this CD it is played three higher with the 20-stringed koto. - Takashi Yoshimatsu
