A native of southeast Pennyslvania, Gary started playing music in his early teens. Before taking up shakuhachi full time in 1994, Gary had performed professionally on drums and guitar in many types of bands from reggae to blues and swing. His introduction to wind instruments was the Native American flute. After being introduced to the sound of the shakuhachi for the first time, he devoted himself full time to its study. He became a student of Ronnie Nyogetsu Reishin Seldin and later studied with Yodo Kurahashi Sensei. Gary has performed at numerous events and shakuhachi festivals over the years. In 2009, Gary was granted his teaching license and professional name "Yugetsu" (Brave Moon) by Seldin Sensei. The practice of za-zen (sitting meditation) and Native American sweatlodge have also been influential in Gary's practice of shakuhachi.He started Moon on Water Shakuhachi Dojo in 2009.The focus of the Dojo is Traditional Shakuhachi,its relationship to Zazen,and the integration of the two practices.Go to ; moononwater.com.
