Tomii Shunzan

Born in Mie Prefecture in 1903, Tomii Shunzan was a politician and a medical doctor as well as a master shakuhachi player. He started teaching himself shakuhachi at the age of 17, then began studying with Nakao Tozan in 1921. He received his masters license (shihan) in 1931 and his grand master (dai shihan) designation in 1937. He worked hard at promoting the Tozan-ryu style, training many younger members including Miyoshi Genzan. He was a major player in the Sankyoku (ensemble music) world in Kyoto. Tomii served as Mayor of Kyoto, (under his given name, Tomii Kiyoshi), from 1967 to 1971. He died at age 71 at his home in Fushimi-ku, Kyoto.
