Yamaguchi Kenji was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1967. He graduated from the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Aoyama Gakuin University. He studied Kinko-ryū shakuhachi under Aoki Reibo II and Sasaki Seifū. Graduated from the 39th NHK Hōgaku Technicians Training Program. He then graduated from the research course of the Modern Japanese Music Institute and passed the NHK Hōgaku Audition. His lifework was to perform and commission outstanding contemporary works centering on the shakuhachi. He presided over the Yamaguchi Shakuhachi Performance Laboratory. He was a lecturer at the Contemporary Japanese Music Course at Senzoku Gakuen School of Music, and the head of the Institute of Contemporary Japanese Music, a research institute affiliated with Senzoku Gakuen School of Music. He passed away on May 22, 2023. He was just 55 years old.
