Yanai Chōfū studied Ikuta-style koto music from the age of 6 and Kinko-ryu shakuhachi since the age of 8. He also studied voice, conducting, and composition, and has served as the permanent conductor of many choral groups and ensembles. He founded the "Yanai Traditional Music Academy" to deepen understanding of Japanese culture through traditional Japanese music and to contribute to the international community. He is active on the world stage as a performer and composer of koto, sangen, and shakuhachi.
