Mikane Shōzan (Mikane Minoru) was born on August 23, 1903 in Okayama City. He studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Wakahara Kozan and Kurakawa Shōzan. He started teaching in 1935. During the course of his 50+ years in the shakuhachi world, he belonged to the Tozan-ryū Shakuhachi Gaku-kai Kanto Branch Tama Executive Committee.
