Nagai Shūzan (Nagai Katsurō) was born May 10, 1905 in Miyagi Prefecture. He studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Ichiyanagi Gazan and started teaching in 1950. During his more than 40 year career he was a member of the Fukuoka Prefecture branch of the Tozan-ryū Shakuhachi Gaku-kai.
