Itō Shōchō III

As a child, Itō Shōchō III studied under her grandfather, the first Itō Shōchō, head of the Itō school of Yamada-ryū koto music, her father, the second Shōchō, and her mother, Mieko. She graduated from the Department of Japanese Music at the Tokyo University of the Arts (Geidai) and, after graduation, studied under Yamada-ryū koto master Torii Namino. While studying at the university, she formed the Japanese music group Tamayura with her parents and other senior students, and held concerts all over Japan. She completed the master's course at the Graduate School of Music at the same university, and also graduated from the 40th class of the NHK Hōgaku Skills Development Association. She performed in five cities in the United States and at the Moscow Conservatory of Music in Russia. After her father passed away in 2005, she took on the title as the third Shocho, and held her first recital the following year. She is a director of the Japan Sankyoku Association, a director of the Yamada-ryū Sōkyoku Association, a member of the Koto Shinchō-kai, Yojiki-kai, and Sho-no-kai as well as a lecturer at Gakushūin University.
