Ishigaki Seizan (Ishigaki Kazuhiro) was born January 6, 1951. A graduate of Kanazawa University (with a degree in electrical engineering), he studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Yamamoto Hōzan, attaining the rank of Dai-Shihan (grand master) and received the highest recognition possible in the Tozan-ryū with the title Chikurin-ken. He was a member of the Jun-Shihan (associate instructor) examination committee multiple times, a frequent lecturer, honored teacher, and award-winning performer, first winning the Gold prize in the Tozan-ryū Honkyoku competition in 1976, followed by 1st place in 1982,1987, and 1991 He also won the Agency for Cultural Affairs Art Festival Award and 3rd place in the 1978 Composition Competition. He was chosen as a cultural ambassador, performing concerts in Holland, the U.S.A., the former Soviet Union, North Europe, the Middle East, Spain and South East Asia. A prolific recording artist, his performances span all genres, from the traditional to the most contemporary.
